PREPARATION - OLDER SANDSTONE SURFACES

Good preparation of a sandstone patio, pathway or driveway prior to sealing is probably the most important part of sealing sandstone, as it will determine the outcome and standard of the finished paved area.

Prior to sealing any sandstone surface it is important to pressure wash the sandstone first to clean off any green algae, moss or lichen that may be present on the surface. To ensure this pressure cleaning process is as effective as possible, a pre-treatment with Smartseal fungicidal wash or moss clear can really help.

The pressure cleaning will also remove any weeds and grass, as well as taking out some of the top layer of jointing sand from between the paving slabs.

Note. It must be noted that now and again, pressure cleaning can cause saturation of the substrate and result in the reappearance of efflorescence. If this happens it may be necessary to allow 10-14 days between pressure cleaning and sealing with Smartseal sandstone sealer.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SAND FILLED JOINTS ONLY

Once the sandstone substrate is completely dry, it is important to sweep kiln dried sand banck between the joints. Any surplus sand must also be swept from the surface to avoid creating a 'sandpaper' texture on the surface after the sealant has cured.

The surface of the sandstone should be as dry as possible. If there is a possibility of rainfall within 8 hours of completion of the project do not attempt to seal.

If you think the slabs, pavers and joints may have been previously treated with any other joint stabiliser or sealer, please call our technical helpline before applying the sealer.

PREPARATION - NEWLY LAID SANDSTONE OR LIMESTONE SLABS

On newly laid sandstone or limestone all that is required is a good sweep with a stiff yard broom. However, it usually does not take long before bird stains and other forms of surface grime can build up, so a quick pressure wash of the sandstone may be needed to prepare the surface.
